3 Types of Receding Hairline Treatments

A receding hairline refers to hair loss that begins at the front of the hair and proceeds to move further back across the top of the head. This can happen gradually and often can worsen substantially before the individual notices there is a problem. Fortunately, the cosmetic issue can be easily resolved in a variety of ways. Keep reading to learn more about receding hairline treatment.

What are the receding hairline treatment types?

Most notably, a receding hairline can be treated through medication, grafting, or scalp reduction. There are pros and cons to each method of treatment, and one may be preferable to another depending on the patient’s specific treatment goals and preferences.

Medication

Medication is, of course, the least invasive method of receding hairline treatment. There are certain popular brand name treatment options that may be available depending on the specific reason for your hair loss and the severity of the receding hairline.

However, some medications focus on slowing the rate of a receding hairline, rather than reverse the hair loss that occurs. One common medication that has proven to be effective in restoring hair loss after a receding hairline occurs is finasteride®. Of course, like most medications, finasteride® has notable side effects such as reduced sex drive and an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Hair grafting

Hair grafting also called a hair transplant, involves taking hair follicles from another part of the head or body (i.e. the back of the head where there is typically an excess) and transplanting the follicles where the hair loss occurs along the hairline. The grafting process may take several sessions and is, of course, more invasive than medication. However, the results of grafting are often more reliable than with medications such as finasteride. While there may be some minor discomfort after the procedure, most patients do not experience any serious side effects.

Scalp reduction

Scalp reduction is a surgical procedure that involves moving the skin with hair on your scalp to cover areas that are bald. Scalp reduction is minimally invasive and involves the use of a local anesthetic. A bald area of the scalp is removed, and the skin with hair is stretched to cover more areas. This is a particularly useful method of receding hairline treatment, rather than treatment for baldness in other areas. Scalp reduction may be recommended along with grafting for receding hairline treatment.

When to seek receding hairline treatment

Anyone who is not happy with their appearance due to a receding hairline should consider how they can benefit from treatment. During a consultation visit with a hair doctor, they can explain in greater depth the pros and cons of hair loss medication, hair grafting, and scalp reduction for treating a receding hairline.
