Anti-Aging With PRP Treatment

PRP treatment can help to minimize the effects of aging on your appearance. The acronym “PRP” stands for platelet-rich plasma, and it uses the patient’s own plasma to rejuvenate their appearance. Your blood contains blood cells and platelets that both play an essential role in the body’s ability to repair itself.

The platelets in the blood contain hundreds of proteins known as growth factors, which help with healing, and they also help the blood clot. PRP treatment uses the body’s natural healing process to fight the effects of aging by concentrating platelets and injecting them into targeted areas. The concentration of platelets used for the treatment can be up to ten times more than the normal distribution of platelets in the blood.

Fighting off the effects of aging with PRP treatment

Platelet-rich plasma treatments are a product of reconstructive surgery and orthopedic medicine to promote natural recovery. The treatment is now used for cosmetic purposes like repairing aging skin and creating a more youthful appearance.

PRP therapy is a straightforward procedure that can be completed in a single appointment. The procedure involves drawing a small amount of blood from patients and putting it into a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other components of the blood. The concentrated platelet solution is then injected into the areas being targeted to increase the production of collagen and elastin, which reduce the effects of aging in these areas.

Some of the benefits of PRP therapy as an anti-aging treatment include:

  • Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
  • Leads to tighter, firmer skin
  • Increases collagen production
  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Increases skin moisture retention

The process

Patients are typically given some basic instructions before undergoing PRP treatments. These include avoiding anti-inflammatory medication at least five days before the procedure, not taking any blood thinners (patients on blood thinners might need to be cleared by their cardiologists for PRP therapy), and drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the treatment. In some cases, patients are advised to perform up to 20 minutes of exercise before their treatment to increase growth factors in their blood.

The treatment itself takes less than 45 minutes and is performed as an outpatient procedure. A topical numbing cream might be applied to the areas being targeted, and about 30 mL of the patient’s blood is drawn. The blood is placed into a centrifuge for about ten minutes to separate the platelet-rich plasma (which has a gold color) from the rest of the patient’s blood. The PRP is then injected into the targeted areas to rejuvenate them.

Patients should make arrangements for transportation back home after their treatment since they will not be in a condition to drive. Some swelling and redness at the site of the injection are perfectly normal, and they can be managed by applying a cold compress to the affected areas. The treated areas should be fully healed within the next 14 days.

Increasing collagen production with PRP treatments

Collagen is one of the main components in the middle layer of skin. The production of collagen is disrupted by the aging process so the amount of it in a person’s skin declines over time. This reduction in collagen production often leads to skin collapsing and sagging. It also leads to a loss of skin elasticity which promotes the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Fortunately, the body never loses its ability to generate new collagen regardless of age. Treatments like PRP therapy and microneedling can be combined to increase collagen production in areas of the skin that have been affected by aging. Microneedling involves making miniature holes in a patient’s face, which leads to increased collagen production to heal the face. The increased collagen production helps to clear wrinkles, fine lines, and saggy skin.

PRP therapy is not restricted to cosmetic treatment even though it is increasingly used for such procedures. The procedure can also be performed to speed up recovery after sustaining injuries or to address damage to joints. There are few side effects associated with the procedure since its performed using the patient’s blood.

Some of the other treatments that can be used to fight off the effects of aging include:

  • Botulinum toxin therapy: This involves injecting areas affected by aging with toxins that prevent muscles in the area from contracting, making skin appear more youthful
  • Dermabrasion: This involves using a special brush to remove the older, outer layer of skin, leaving behind healthier, younger skin
  • Chemical peel: This involves using acids to peel away the outer layer of the skin
