Common Hair Loss Treatment Options

Hair Loss Treatment Schaumburg, IL

For many people, losing their hair can be a distressing experience. Temporary to permanent hair loss can greatly affect confidence and self-esteem. Fortunately, several hair loss treatment options are available to help combat this issue and promote hair restoration. Here are some of the most common and effective methods to address hair loss.

Topical treatments

Topical treatments are one of the first lines of defense against hair loss. They typically come in the form of foams, lotions, or shampoos that patients can apply directly to their scalp or other areas of their body affected by hair loss. These treatments may contain ingredients like minoxidil, which helps stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. Regular application can slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth.

Oral medication

For those experiencing pattern baldness, they may be able to take oral medications like finasteride. Typically, this treatment is reserved for male patients. Finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can slow hair loss or promote new hair growth.

Finasteride can take a few months to show results, and patients will need to keep taking it to retain its benefits. Rare side effects of finasteride include diminished sex drive and sexual function and an increased risk of prostate cancer. This treatment may also not work as well for patients over the age of 60.

Hair transplants

For patients seeking effective and long-lasting results, surgical hair transplants are available. Hair transplants involve removing hair follicles from one part of the body (typically the back or sides of the scalp) and implanting them into areas with thinning or no hair. Each patch of hair has one or several hairs, or micrografts and minigrafts. Sometimes, the medical professional will take a larger strip of skin containing multiple hair groupings, depending on the patient's treatment goals and the severity of their baldness.

Hair transplants are outpatient procedures and do not require hospitalization. The medical professional will administer sedation to ease any discomfort. Possible risks and complications of hair transplants include:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Infection

This procedure provides natural-looking results and is considered a more permanent solution to hair loss; however, hereditary hair loss will eventually progress despite hair restoration treatment.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

PRP therapy is a non-surgical hair restoration option that has gained popularity in recent years. The procedure involves extracting a small amount of blood from the patient, separating the platelets, and injecting the platelet-rich plasma back into the scalp or area experiencing hair loss. PRP contains growth factors that stimulate hair growth and help rejuvenate dormant hair follicles.

Laser therapy

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-surgical hair loss treatment that uses laser light to stimulate cell growth and charge dormant hair follicles. It helps combat hair loss and improve the volume and appearance of the patient's hair. This treatment is painless and has no known side effects. However, more research is needed to evaluate its long-term efficacy.

LLLT is an FDA-approved treatment. It mainly treats androgenetic alopecia (pattern or hereditary baldness). Additionally, LLLT can be used for other forms of alopecia and hair loss, such as those associated with chemotherapy or severe hair loss during pregnancy or menopause. Medical professionals can use LLLT to complement PRP therapy and hair transplant procedures.
