Popular Female Pattern Baldness Treatment

Female Pattern Baldness Treatment Schaumburg, IL

You might need female pattern baldness treatment if you find yourself losing hair as you age. Some hair loss is normal since most people lose close to a hundred hair strands per day. The hair loss usually does not lead to any noticeable changes.

Female pattern baldness can be triggered by various factors like stress and dietary deficiencies. Hair needs nutrients like iron and vitamin D to remain healthy. Some hair loss can also be triggered by inflammatory disorders that affect the scalp, like eczema. Hair loss can even be caused by certain hairstyles that put pressure on hair roots like braids or ponytails.

Getting female pattern baldness treatment

Genetics is one of the leading factors that contribute to female pattern baldness. For example, a woman’s genes can make her hair strands thinner or lead to small follicles. Age and hormonal changes are also significant factors. Menopausal women are more likely to need female pattern baldness treatment from a hair doctor.

Female pattern baldness leads to a reduction in the rate hair grows. It causes hair follicles to shrink, making hair finer and thinner. Female pattern baldness often begins at the part line, and it sometimes appears all over the scalp. That includes hair at the temples. Male baldness typically starts in the front of the head and recedes as the person goes bald.

Female pattern baldness is typically broken down into three main categories:

  • Type I is the minor thinning of hair that begins around the part line
  • Type II is the widening of the part and the thinning around it
  • Type III refers to the thinning that goes on all over the scalp

Women who find themselves dealing with female pattern baldness can often mask the early stages of their condition by adopting new hairstyles. However, it will eventually become impossible to hide the hair loss. Our hair doctor recommends getting an early diagnosis since that helps minimize future hair loss. Some popular female pattern baldness treatments include:

1. Minoxidil

This is the only medication with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) stamp of approval as a treatment for female pattern baldness. It is also an effective way to treat male pattern baldness. Treatments typically involve using products that contain two to five percent of minoxidil.

Treatment involves rubbing the solution into the scalp daily. Minoxidil does not fully restore lost hair, but it helps patients regrow a significant amount. It can take up to six months to get the full benefits of minoxidil. Some of the side effects associated with minoxidil include:

  • Itching
  • Dryness
  • Hair growth in the forehead or cheeks
  • Redness

2. Dutasteride and finasteride

The FDA has not yet approved these drugs to treat female pattern baldness, but they have been approved for male hair loss. Studies indicate that they promote the regrowth of hair loss in women. Common side effects of these medications include:

  • hot flashes
  • increased risk of congenital disabilities
  • reduced sex drive
  • headaches

3. Spironolactone

This is a diuretic, meaning it gets rid of excess fluid in the body. It also blocks androgen production, helping to regrow hair lost due to female pattern baldness. Patients prescribed spironolactone might have to get regular electrolyte and blood tests while they are taking it. Some of the side effects of spironolactone include:

  • fatigue
  • tender breasts
  • spotting between periods
  • electrolyte imbalances

4. Laser treatments

The FDA has approved laser helmets and combs as treatments for hair loss. This approach involves using light energy to stimulate the regrowth of hair. More research is needed to understand the effectiveness of laser treatments on female baldness.

5. Platelet-rich plasma therapy

This alternative treatment involves using the patient’s platelets to stimulate hair growth in the scalp. It involves drawing blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets, and injecting the platelets into the scalp to promote hair growth.

6. Supplementation

Hair loss caused by vitamin or nutrient deficiencies can be addressed with supplements. Blood tests are typically used to detect any deficient nutrients, then supplements can be provided. Supplements like iron, folic acid, biotin, and omega-6 fatty acids have all been shown to help hair regrowth.

7. Hair transplants

This is typically recommended as a last resort when other options have failed to address female pattern baldness. Hair transplants typically involve removing hair from healthy areas and transporting it to bald areas. There are multiple ways to go about doing this. Patients who are not quite ready for hair transplants can cover up their bald areas with wigs or other types of hairpieces.
