Hair thinning explained

Many factors can contribute to hair loss (alopecia) or thinning. It can result from genetics, age, stress, medication, or underlying health conditions, such as infections or thyroid disease. If someone has a parent or grandparent that began to bald or experienced extremely thin hair early on, the patient will likely also. It is important to recognize that this condition does not belong to a specific sex. The American Hair Loss Association reports that by age 35, two-thirds of male patients will experience some degree of thinning or loss, while 40 percent make up the American hair loss population.

Hair thinning treatments

We require all patients to undergo a consultation to pinpoint the cause and determine the severity of thinning. This portion of the appointment can involve a medical history review, hair strand and follicle testing, and blood tests. Once we narrow down the exact cause, we can craft a hair-thinning treatment plan. Our provider may consider one of three popular options:

Medication

The medication we prescribe can surpass the power of over-the-counter alternatives. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved minoxidil for hair loss for female and male patients, as it stimulates blood flow in hair follicles. We can provide this medication in pill form or apply it as a gel, liquid, or foam. For male patients, we may recommend finasteride, an oral medication. It blocks a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which may be responsible for male pattern baldness.

Hair transplant

Possibly one of the most well-known hair thinning treatments, hair transplants can occur in two ways: follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT). The FUE technique attracts many due to its minimally invasive nature. It involves removing individual healthy hair follicles from an isolated area, usually the back of the head, and transplanting them into the thinning areas. This is accomplished through harvesting using a micropunch that leaves no visible scarring.

The FUT technique is slightly more invasive, removing a thin strip of skin from the back of the head. This strip is separated into smaller sections and transplanted into the recipient (thinning) sites. FUT will leave behind a small linear scar after healing, but once the patient's hair begins to grow, the bulk of it is covered.

Low-level light therapy

Low-level light therapy, or LLLT for short, is an innovative treatment that utilizes wavelengths of red light. The wavelengths penetrate the scalp, which stimulates the patient's follicles and blood flow. We may use it with other hair thinning treatments, such as a hair transplant or medication, but this decision will vary by patient.
