What is a Hair Graft?

Hair Graft Schaumburg, IL

If you are dealing with hair loss, a hair graft might be one of the solutions to consider. Hair is something many people take for granted until they lose it. Hair loss is hardly desirable and tends to affect people’s relationships and self-confidence. Also called hair transplantation, a hair graft is one of the options for replacing and restoring lost hair. Continue reading to learn more about the procedure.

Overview of hair graft

A hair graft deals with the transfer of healthy hair follicles to areas without viable follicles. A “graft” refers to the skin strip full of hair. Grafts can be obtained from any part of the body. Still, they are usually taken from the occipital scalp, located on the posterior scalp and called the donor area since there is better sustainability in the area. The size and shape of the graft depend on the technique, tools, and technology.

The doctor will create hair grafts by taking tissue from the donor area. The goal is to take a small tissue piece that can grow hair and transfer it to the part of the scalp where the hair is lost. The grafted piece can be taken as a strip, called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), or as single units, called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

The grafting process

For FUT, the grafts are taken from the donor area with stereoscopic dissecting microscopes. The doctor will conserve the follicular units and prime them for transfer to the receiving site. Each follicular unit usually contains two or three hairs. The doctor creates incisions in the scalp that are the same size and shape as the graft. They then attach the grafts individually to the recipient area at the right length and direction to ensure everything blends with the remaining hair.

With FUE, removing a donor strip is not required. Rather, the doctor will remove each follicular unit from the scalp. They will then preserve the units and transplant them into the scalp.

The number of grafts depends on the patient. Hair quantity and density depends on race and diminishes with age. People with total male pattern hair loss may require thousands of grafts, while those with residual hair or thinning hair will not need that much. Many factors determine the size of the procedure, including hair type and color.

Patients will need to have a discussion with the doctor to determine the success of the procedure. It is also important to set realistic expectations for the treatment, but the rate of success is high, so patients can expect remarkable results as well.

The results

The results of the hair graft procedure are usually noticeable about six to nine months after the hair graft procedure. For some, it might take up to 12 months. Patients need to note that between two to eight weeks after the treatment, the grafted hair will shed off. It is also normal for the hair to appear thinner than it was before the transplant.

In summary

Hair grafting is an effective procedure for treating hair loss. Feel free to schedule a consultation to learn more about the treatment.
